About the Workshop
Glacier National Park has been called the crown jewel of our national park system. Its rugged alpine scenery, raging rivers, colorful rock formations, and lush vegetation make it truly awe inspiring and an extremely diverse photography location. Our base in Saint Mary’s, on the east side of the “Going to the Sun” highway, gives us easy access to both lower and upper elevation lake, stream, forest, and prairie locations as well as the incredible, sweeping alpine vistas at the base of some of Glacier’s highest peaks.
Late September is a great time to visit as park visitation is low and the scenery is stunning at this time. The contrast of fall colors with crisp, blue skies and red rock is not something that you will forget. Colorful leaves swirling around in pools at the base of distant falls beckon the nature photographer and the wide open vistas on the east side of the park are iconic and one of a kind.
We will start at some lower elevation locales by visiting Lake Saint Mary, which makes for a great reflection of the high peaks that form its backdrop. We will then proceed to the famous Many Glacier area, visiting Swiftcurrent Lake, and Red Rock Falls, where water flowing through a spectacular series of cascades will form the framework for many of our compositions.
Delving deeper into the park, we will photograph at several locations alongside and near Two Medicine Lake. Weather permitting, we will make our way to Logan Pass where we will photograph high alpine peaks, small waterfalls flowing though alpine tundra, and the colorful tundra plants that carpet much of the alpine zone. With a little luck, we will observe and photograph the playful antics of the resident mountain goats and very possibly elk and black bear.
Included in the Workshop
The workshop fee includes 3-1/2 days of workshop instruction, and of course, great picture taking opportunities.
Needless to say, your fees include the professional instruction of a PAW leader. All workshops have leaders, however a PAW leader is an expert on the location and has proven skills as a workshop instructor. Our instructors are there to help you make better images and fill your portfolios, not theirs. PAW leaders don’t photograph on our workshops; they teach.
The workshop fee does not include meals, lodging or your personal transportation while on the workshop or getting to and from the workshop.
This workshop will allow a maximum of 12 participants. To make sure that everyone gets the help and attention they deserve, we include a qualified assistant on all full workshops. A minimum of 6 participants are required for this workshop.
Schedule
On Sept. 22, 2010 we will meet in the conference room of Saint Mary Lodge for an orientation to the workshop at 7:00 pm.
Subsequent days will see us rising early to be at the morning shooting site well before dawn. Mid-morning will see us in a meeting space looking at and critiquing the photos we just shot, as well as discussing photographic techniques that we will practice in later shoots. Each afternoon will see us heading back into the field to sample the magic of a new location during some of the best light of the day.
The workshop finishes around noon on Sep 26th.
