About the Workshop
Even if you've never dreamt of being a full-time photographer, have you ever thought about getting your images into a magazine or a gallery or a calendar? Have you thought about doing a book but you didn’t know how to go about it? Or maybe the thought of earning some money with your images has crossed your mind but you didn’t know where to start? Or you tried but your images were rejected and then you gave up. Maybe you are just stuck in a rut and you want a little inspiration. Tryin to earn money in photography sure can be frustrating if you don’t know what you are doing or what the tricks of the trade are.
Did you know that the hardest, most competitive and least lucrative way to earn money with your images is to try to sell single pictures to popular outlets like the Sierra Club calendar or Outdoor Photographer? Did you know that submitting to national magazines just about guarantees you will be frustrated at best and mortified at worst? And did you know that there are lots of surefire ways you can work locally, on weekends and still earn thousands of dollars? You should know these things.
David Middleton has taught this class for 10 years and has continued to refine and broaden the material presented in this class. He draws on all of his 25 years as a professional photographer and shares everything he knows about being a pro and earning money. Scott Rouse adds his considerable expertise of the digital world to the class. Scott is comfortable in both the PC and Mac worlds and is equally skilled in Aperture, Lightroom, Photoshop, Bridge and is a web- and graphic-designer.
Every participant will leave with their own well-developed project to pursue and a customized plan to follow to get money-making images without much money-burning effort. This workshop is unique on may levels and we have added another twist to the workshop this year, it is based in David’s home territory. The class will visit some of his favorite photography haunts and will spend time in David’s personal office to get a close-up view of his workspace and see behind the curtain in to the real world of a longtime pro.
Every one of today’s successful photographers has had help getting started, help navigating the inshore shoals that ground their enthusiasm. If you want help seeing your way clear to the deep, rich waters, this is the class for you.

You’ll receive pages of handouts including examples of query letters that worked and did not, book and story proposals that were successful and those that were ignored and sure-fire submission ideas that work in any genre of magazine.

PAW workshops: the best leaders, locations, and instruction.
Transportation and Lodging
The workshop is based in the thriving little town of Manchester Center, Vermont. There are many nice mom and pop motels from which to choose, as well as many very nice, classic New England inns in the area. A list of suggested lodgings will be sent to all participants.
The closest airport is in Albany, New York, about a hour away to the west. Burlington airport is 2 hours away to the north.
There are also lots of places in the area to buy dark chocolate for David and ridiculous gourmet coffee for Scott.
Schedule
The class will meet everyday for classroom presentations by David and Scott. Each afternoon, David and Scott will present them with a photography assignment meant to challenge them mentally, creatively and photographically. As a special part of this workshop, the class will visit the farm that has been the center of David’s latest book project as a part of following and examining his process from inspiration to publication.
Equipment and Gear
For this workshop you should bring all of the gear that you would normally take with you for a photography trip. Once at the workshop we will work to see what is working in your kit and what isn’t.
Please bring clothes and shoes that are comfortable for walking in the countryside. The weather should be very pleasant and we do expect to be outside photographing. Bring your computer or plenty of paper to keep notes. We will have lots of handouts and electronic files for you to take home, but you’ll want to add all of the extra information that comes from the group sessions.
Feel free to contact Scott or David if you have specific questions or concerns about what to bring.
The Leaders
David Middleton
David Middleton has led more than 150 photography tours and taught more than 200 photography workshops. He is a gifted and enthusiastic teacher who has taught photographers and nature lovers of all levels and interests. Every year, he critiques more than 10,000 images and teaches close to 1,000 photography students. David lives in the heart of the Green Mountains in southern Vermont and now does most of his photography at a nearby 240-year old dairy farm. He has gone from taking pictures of the wild and woolly lions and tigers and bears to taking those of the dull and domesticated heifers, bulls and old farmers...although the latter can be, at times, a bit more wild and woolly than anyone might expect.
When not taking pictures, David is an avid, but slow, runner and biker and an imaginative birdwatcher who spends probably more time than he should wandering the woods and meadows on his old farm with his black lab, Abe.

Scott Rouse
Scott Rouse is a photographer, graphic designer, web designer, instructor, IT professional, and self-proclaimed geek-extraordinaire.
Photographically, Scott’s favorite subjects are wildlife and adventure sports. As an outdoor fanatic, he loves to participate in the same sports he photographs: skiing, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, etc.
Scott helps photographers and other artists create and maintain websites to show their work and promote their business. As an expert in new marketing techniques and social media technologies such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Flickr, and more, he helps clients and students incorporate these vital elements into their businesses. He also consults on Information Technology (IT) topics such as networking, printing, and software and hardware installation and maintenance for both Macs and PCs.
It all sounds pretty nerdy and boring, but Scott has a very friendly and patient way of explaining the technical (as well as the artistic) side of photography. When he’s not traveling and talking about the digital world, he’s living in Missoula, MT with his lovely wife, Jessica, and their dog, Sierra.
